Stefán S. Stefánsson
Stefán S. Stefánsson, born in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, in 1957, is an Icelandic saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He began making music as a drummer, later studied flute, and moved to the saxophone at about age seventeen. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1983 and has worked as an instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and teacher.
His music is associated primarily with jazz, big-band music, and Icelandic folk-music influences, as well as works for wind and chamber ensembles. He formed Ljósin í bænum to perform his own music; the group released two albums, including Disco Frisco. He has also performed with Tívolí and the Reykjavík Big Band, and has composed or arranged music for ensembles and recordings. At the 2015 Icelandic Music Awards, he was named composer of the year in the jazz and blues category, while An Icelander at Alhambra Palace received the album-of-the-year recognition in the same category.
